Mustaches for Kids is volunteer-run organization started by brave mustache growers in Los Angeles in 1999 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization dedicated to granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. Over the next 10 years, Mustaches for Kids chapters have spread across the world, a steady expansion that is not unlike the measured, deliberate growth of a Mustache. Each chapter of Mustaches for Kids selects their own local kids-focused charities to support.
Mustaches for Kids Baltimore was founded in 2008 and set a national Mustache record for best inaugural Growing season. In our first year, we raised over $23,000 and positively impacted 11,000 Baltimore city public school children! We “grew” in our second year, raising over $25,000. And then the success just kept on going! See our annual numbers on our homepage.
Not bad for a bunch of guys in mustaches.
This year we are proud to again support Donors Choose.org as our benefactor. Donors Choose.org is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit that allows donors to individually choose and directly fund teacher-submitted educational projects, improving the public school experience for students in Baltimore City and around the country.
Each year, participants (“Growers”) raise money by growing sweet, sweet Mustaches for a one-month period. They shave their faces, except for the Mustache, a minimum of one time per week. The Growers use the mustache to start conversations and solicit donations from friends, family, co-workers, and random strangers. At the end of the Growing Season, Mustaches for Kids hosts a Mustache Contest where the facial hair is evaluated by an independent panel of judges, and one Mustache is declared to be the “Sweetest.”
World-wide, Mustaches for Kids has enjoyed the efforts of an impressive number of Growers who, collectively over the years, have raised over $1 MILLION dollars for a variety of local children’s causes! The full list of M4K chapters can be found at the official Mustaches for Kids website.
